Founder: Nils Mattern, Matt Consulting GmbH, a Berlin creative agency. Product: Wohnungsmappe, a SaaS tool that walks an apartment-hunter step by step from a blank page to a complete, landlord-ready application, shareable as a polished PDF or by QR code at the viewing. milbo: product conception and build, from prototype through launch to ongoing upkeep. One of our earliest SaaS products.

The Ambition

Matt Consulting is a Berlin creative agency, good at positioning brands for the younger audiences most people struggle to reach. What it did not have in-house was a team to take an ambitious software idea and actually build it. The founders had the idea: Wohnungsmappe, a way to fix the quiet misery of applying for a flat. They wanted it in market fast.

We had already built them a smaller tool, so the trust was there when the bigger one arrived. Nils and his co-founder walked us through the idea, we walked them through how it could really be built, and it was quickly clear this was worth doing together. It was also bigger than it first looked, which is the part that came to matter.

The Build

“A brief that kept changing, week after week.”

The job was to take a renter from a blank page to an application a landlord takes seriously, and to make the whole thing feel guided rather than daunting.

So we built exactly that: a step-by-step tool that walks a user from their details, through a cover letter, to their documents, and turns the result into a clean, designed PDF with a QR code they can hand over at the viewing. One account can run several applications at once, couples and guarantors can share a single folder of up to four people, and it is all hosted in Germany, where the data belongs.

The hard part was that none of it would sit still. The requirements changed again and again, and every change rippled back through what we had already built. We absorbed all of it and still shipped, and we shipped something good, because somewhere in the middle we decided this product was going to be properly good and went past the brief to get there. This was the first time we ran a complete SaaS life cycle end to end, concept to prototype to launch to live iteration, and it showed us exactly where that cycle is won or lost: the back-end scramble that ate our weeks was the cost of questions we should have forced at the start. That discipline now opens every build we take.

What Followed

Wohnungsmappe went live and drew more than a thousand users in its first week. A renter signs up, builds a full application step by step, and walks into the viewing able to share a polished folder by QR while everyone else is still wrestling with email attachments. It is built on a truth most searchers learn the hard way: landlords expect a complete, professional set of documents, and the ones who turn up with less wait months longer.

It is one of our earliest SaaS products, and the relationship has outlasted the build. It began with a smaller tool at the end of 2024 and has run for more than a year since, prototype to launch to the upkeep and new features we still ship.

If you have a software idea that is bigger than it looks, and you want a team that will make it properly good and stay for the long build instead of vanishing at launch, that is the work we like most. The next step is a call.
